As with any successful business, preparation is crucial. The purpose of this article is get you started on the right track by explaining some of the key elements needed in preparing to work from home.

o The first thing you will want to do is to create a working environment. If you already have an office set up in your home, then this will obviously be the best place to “set up shop”. If you do not have an office or study in your home, then you need to create a designated workspace away from distractions, with enough room for a desk, computer, business materials, and perhaps a printer, fax machine, or any other office equipment you may need. If you have actual merchandise that you need to stock, plan on creating an organized storage system for this as well.

o You want to have enough space to work freely and comfortably, and have plenty of room to stay organized. So look around your home and get creative. Perhaps you have a barely-used dining room or formal living room. Or maybe you can convert part of a garage or basement into your new office. Whatever you decide, make sure it is a specific area designated for your home based business.

o When planning your workspace, you will also need to do a little research on exactly what types of materials you need. Many online opportunities only require access to the internet and the ability to read and type. Others may require you to have a phone and fax available for additional correspondence. Or, depending on the type of business venture, you may require a filing system, specific types of paper, specific types of ledger or bookkeeping materials, or even shipping materials such as boxes, bubble wrap, postage, envelopes, etc.

o Perhaps one of the most important keys to the success of a home based business is time-management. Remember, when working at home, there is no punch clock. It is all too easy to become lazy and let projects and deadlines slip away. This is one of the biggest mistakes you can make! Set a realistic schedule for yourself, away from social and family activities, and stick to it. Staying disciplined with the time you put towards your home based business will help keep you from getting overwhelmed and keep you ahead of the game.

I know I need my own space when I am going to start writing to my blog or do an affiliate promotion. My space has to be clean and organized or I don’t feel comfortable. Anyone needing additional income can work from home. First, and most importantly, do you own a computer with an internet connection? If not, do you have unrestricted access to a computer with an internet connection? Please be advised that working off of your employer’s computer is extremely unadvisable and may result in your termination. As this is one of my main faults. I tend to get on the internet to do minor tasks for blogging while I am at work. Not a good thing, if you get caught!

The Basic Necessities

Owning a computer at home is, of course, easier. Today, there are more ways than ever to acquire a good notebook (laptop computer) or desk-top system at an affordable price. Almost every major retailer offering electronics and computers has great deals available. You can also search online, through classifieds, and even pawn shops for both new and used equipment. If you don’t feel educated enough about computers to pick something out, then recruit a friend, family member, or community partner (someone at your church or library) to help you in your search. Many retailers may try to up-sell you to an advance model; however all that is required is a computer with moderate speed and access to the internet.

Second, do you have an e-mail address? This is very important as this will serve not only as your online identification, it will also serve as your main vehicle of online correspondence. Another mistake many people make is to assume that these home based opportunities are reserved only for the “stay-at-home” mom, the retiree, the college student, or bored house wife. This is a common misconception. Perhaps you do have a full time job. Do you have an extra hour of time to donate in the mornings or after work? Do you have some extra time on the weekends? Sometimes that’s all the amount of time you need to begin working at home. Tip for full-timers: journal your work-time, social time, and family activities for a few weeks. Is there any free time there? Then these are the hours that you could be making money.

So now, where to begin? Here are just some of the most popular ways to start working at home and begin making money online.

One popular method is to participate in online surveys. There are virtually thousands of web-sights offering everything from prizes to cash simply by providing your opinion. Some of these sites will operate on a point-based system, where each survey completed is awarded a point value. When you meet the required number of points, they will send you a check. Other sites will immediately provide you with a gift certificate or restaurant voucher immediately upon completion. Often with these sites, the more you surveys you complete, the more they will send to you. All you need to get started is an e-mail account and e-mail address for the companies to notify you about a survey taking place or to send one directly to you for you to complete.

Product testing is another way to work online from home. No matter what your race, gender, education, or income level, companies world-wide are looking for individuals to test their products. In addition to paying you for your opinion, many companies will let you keep the products! From lipstick to cameras, cell-phones to lawn-mowers, product testing is an easy way to start working at home. Again, there are countless sites offering these types of opportunities. Many operate as a “broker” for larger companies (e.g. Kraft, Cannon) and only require you’re a small amount of time and honesty.

Are you an experienced writer or web designer? Then maybe freelance work is the way for you to start working at home. Magazines, newspapers, and publishers are always looking for writers, editors, proofreaders, and graphic designers, and there are a multitude of websites with these type job listings. Often, all they require is for you to submit a writing sample or provide pieces you have had published.

Online auctions are also an easy way to work from home by selling products over the internet.

BLOGGING is easy. I bet you have kept a personal journal at one point in your life right? Or had to keep one for an English class? If so, you already know how to blog! This could be one of the main reasons for their skyrocketing popularity, the fact that ANYONE can create a blog. All you need is something to write about, which is entirely up to you! Plus web-based blogging is SO EASY you will be shocked by its simplicity.

Do you have what it takes?

There are other factors to consider if you truly want to succeed in making money online. Many people are surprised to realize how demanding working at home can be. All too often, many people that pursue a home based career become overwhelmed and give up before even making a profit.

The reason for this is simple – many people assume that working at home is easy and does not require any effort. This is one of the most common misconceptions. While pursuing a home based career does not require a Masters Degree or MBA, there are certain skills needed in order to be successful. The purpose of the article is to explore the most important of these skills, and to help you decide if you have what it takes to start making money at home.Like I stated before, time-management is crucial to the success of any home based career. While not having a boss managing your every move sounds appealing, this can also trigger laziness and keep you from staying motivated. One way to avoid this common mistake is to create a realistic work schedule. Decide how much time per week you want to work and what hours during the day can you be the most productive and have the least distractions. Once you’ve decided this, treat your schedule just as you would a job outside of the home.

Lack of self-discipline goes hand-in-hand with time-management and is also crucial to your success. Anyone pursuing a home based career must set daily and weekly goals to have work completed. Many freelance jobs already have deadlines required for submissions; however, if you are promoting a website or establishing a home based business, you must make setting and meeting goals a priority. Establishing deadlines is an easy way to keep work from piling up and is also a great way to track your success.

Remaining organized is also extremely important in working at home. You must treat your home career as a working business, complete with a work space. Set up an area in your home that is a clearly defined work space. Make sure you have the materials and equipment needed for your type of work. Keep your work space neat and organized, and schedule a “clean-up” on a regular basis. Many of these jobs also require good record keeping, so decide ahead of time what method of record keeping works the best for you.

A full understanding of these skills and a commitment to these work habits are crucial to the success of anyone pursuing to work from home.
